The Digital News Publishers Association, a group whose members include outlets owned by the Ambani and Adani groups, has asked India's Supreme Court to strike down parts of the country's data protection law, The Hindu reports.
Its petition targets provisions of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and the rules issued under it in 2025. The association argues that the law restricts the right to information and freedom of expression because it gives no exemption for journalism, and that this threatens reporters, whistleblowers and transparency campaigners.
It also says the law conflicts with the Supreme Court's own landmark ruling that privacy is a fundamental right.
A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant is due on 27 October to hear a group of petitions against the law, including the publishers' challenge.
