The Russian political scientist and elections expert Alexander Kynev has gone on hunger strike in pre-trial detention, his lawyer says, according to the independent outlet Meduza.
Mikhail Biryukov said his client shares an overcrowded cell with 34 other people and cannot use its toilet, a hole in the floor, because his leg is in a cast after being broken in two places. The lawyer said the defence was trying to have him moved somewhere that met his medical needs.
Mr Kynev has been held since 25 September on charges of attempting to sell drugs, which he denies. The legal aid project Slovo Zashchite has said he was badly beaten when he was arrested, and the political scientist Ekaterina Schulmann has said the beating was meant to make him confess to treason. He was detained after criticising Russia's latest election.
