Kerala rights commission orders checks on private clinics after boy’s death in Kannur

·

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has told the state's health department to make sure private clinics meet required standards and to act against those that do not, after a 17-year-old boy died following tonsil surgery in Kannur in July 2024, The Hindu reports.

The commission's inquiry found that the doctor who operated did not have legal authorisation to practise in the state, and that neither the clinic where the surgery took place nor the one where the boy was later admitted was registered. It said there had been culpable negligence.

It has asked officials to check the qualifications and registration of clinic staff and to set up monitoring, and ordered a further police investigation, including into alleged changes to medical records. The case followed a complaint by the boy's father.
