Senior Muslim clerics in Kashmir have criticised an eviction notice served on a historic mosque at Delhi's Race Course, The Hindu reports. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the region's chief cleric, said he was deeply disturbed that the mosque, registered as Waqf religious property since 1977 and listed as a heritage site, had been given six days to leave, and questioned why the Waqf authorities had not defended it.
He linked the case to his opposition to recent amendments to India's Waqf law, which increased the role of government-appointed members in managing Muslim religious endowments. Jammu and Kashmir's grand mufti, Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, urged the Union minority affairs minister, Kiren Rijiju, to intervene and called for the mosque's legal status to be examined with due process. A leading Shia cleric also criticised the notice.
