La Rochelle fans honour Lions lock Hyron Andrews after his sudden death in France

·

Supporters of the French club La Rochelle paid tribute to Hyron Andrews, the Lions lock who died on Friday, when the Johannesburg side went ahead with their Champions Cup match at Stade Marcel-Deflandre on Saturday, Daily Maverick reports.

Andrews, 31, died of a suspected heart attack at the team's hotel on the Île de Ré. The players and management decided together to play, and head coach Ivan van Rooyen said they wanted to honour him and his family. Home fans lined the route from the team bus applauding, the crowd held a full minute's silence, and spectators stood to applaud in the fifth minute in recognition of his number 5 shirt.

La Rochelle's South African players presented a signed jersey for his family. The Lions lost 31-14, and the crowd gave them a standing ovation as they walked a lap of honour.
