Mnangagwa plays down rift with Chiwenga but warns Zanu-PF dissenters

·

Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has described open tension with his deputy, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, as normal in a revolutionary party, while warning that those who stray from the party's position will be left behind, according to a report carried by AllAfrica.

The two men, who both played leading roles in the 2017 coup that removed Robert Mugabe, traded veiled criticism on stage at Zanu-PF's national conference in Chinhoyi. Chiwenga asked whether the mistakes that brought down Mugabe's government were being repeated, and has been campaigning against businesspeople he links to corruption.

Mnangagwa told reporters the party was united and that dissenting voices were to be expected. The conference backed changes to the party constitution aligned with an amendment that has extended his rule beyond 2028, which Chiwenga opposes.
