The International Weightlifting Federation has named Moscow as host of its 2030 world championships, the Kyiv Independent reports, making it the first Olympic-recognised body to award an event to Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The 2029 edition will be held in Ahmedabad, India.

The decision follows the International Olympic Committee's provisional lifting in July of the Russian Olympic Committee's suspension, which had been in force since October 2023. Ukraine's Olympic committee has challenged that ruling through arbitration, and nine European countries have urged the European Commission to stop funding sports bodies that let Russian and Belarusian athletes compete.

Russian lifters will still have to meet the IOC's anti-doping requirements to take part internationally. Russia has been largely sidelined from Olympic sport since 2017 over doping and, later, the war.
