A passenger ferry service on the Narva River in north-east Estonia could end after five years because its boat is too large for the Port of Narva, ERR News reports.
The Estonian Transport Administration found during an inspection that the riverboat Caroline is not a small vessel, while the port is registered only as a small craft harbour. When the boat was first measured it was gauged at the waterline, but its real length is 120cm over the limit. The agency said earlier use of the port had been an oversight by the operator.
The city has already changed the port's registration and plans a passenger waiting area, but it must also find a harbourmaster licensed for larger vessels. Caroline's owner, Kaspar Eisel, said such staff were hard to find locally and that passing the cost on through port fees could make the service unviable.
