Investment scam calls traced to Norwegian numbers held by US telecoms firm, NRK finds

·

Fraudsters luring Norwegians into fake investment schemes are calling from genuine Norwegian phone numbers, an investigation by public broadcaster NRK has found.

NRK registered phone numbers on known scam websites and logged the calls that followed. Recently it was rung 32 times from eight Norwegian numbers allocated to Bandwidth, a US telecoms company which NRK says holds 31,100 numbers in Norway. A Norwegian operator that examined two of the calls said there was no sign of spoofing and that the numbers appeared to be real ones used in professional fraud. Telia told NRK the calling pattern matched investment fraud.

The calls were reportedly routed through the Norwegian operator Unifon, which says it takes the findings very seriously and has given notice to end its traffic agreement, which has a three-month notice period. Unifon stressed it had no basis to say the company itself had acted illegally.
