A photograph of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon standing with three Black Power members has been shared online in response to National's criticism of rival politicians mixing with gangs, the NZ Herald reports.
The picture, posted by Mongrel Mob life member Harry Tam, was taken at Parliament during the Crown's apology to survivors of abuse in state and faith-based care. The men were not wearing patches. Another photo shows National minister Erica Stanford talking with a man in what appears to be gang regalia. Both were representing the government.
The row began after Te Pāti Māori and Green figures attended a Mongrel Mob event during the election campaign, followed by footage of a Labour candidate campaigning near gang members. A 2024 photo of National MP Tama Potaka with patched members has also surfaced. Labour leader Chris Hipkins accused Luxon of a double standard.
