OpenAI has appointed former US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to a newly created post of senior counsellor for national security modernisation, CNBC reported. The company said he will focus on how artificial intelligence can strengthen US national security and cybersecurity, working with senior leadership and outside partners and helping US allies adopt advanced AI responsibly.
Chief executive Sam Altman said the US had an extraordinary opportunity to spread what the company calls democratic AI to other countries. Driscoll said national security needs were changing faster than at any point in the past 50 years and that AI could cut paperwork and speed up answers. He left the Army post earlier this year after months of reported tension with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. An Iraq war veteran, he pushed military modernisation, including wider access to drone and counter-drone technology.
