OpenAI has signed agreements covering energy, investment and government work in Abu Dhabi as it seeks backing from Gulf investors for a new $20bn funding round, CNBC reports.
Chief executive Sam Altman met Abu Dhabi's crown prince, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to the emirate's media office. The deals include an agreement with oil company ADNOC and G42 to deploy OpenAI's technology, work with sovereign investor Mubadala and Inception42 on investment analysis, and a five-year agreement with Inception42 to bring its AI into government, business and education. The Abu Dhabi government also plans to use the company's models to turn policies and regulations into machine-readable form.
Abu Dhabi investment firm MGX has backed both OpenAI and rival Anthropic, and CNBC reported at the weekend that the new round would be co-led by investors from the UAE.
