Polls show support slipping for Latin America’s new right-wing leaders

·

Several conservative leaders elected across Latin America in recent years are losing public support, according to polling reported by the Buenos Aires Times in a story from the AFP news agency.

An Ipsos poll last week put Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori's approval at 40 per cent, down from 57 per cent when she took office in August, while Colombia's Abelardo de la Espriella lost more than three points in his first month. In Chile, a left-wing foundation found that a quarter of President José Antonio Kast's voters regret backing him, and Argentina's Javier Milei has hit record lows a year before seeking re-election.

An AmericasBarometer survey of 21 countries also found weak backing for leaders of eight US allies in Donald Trump's "Shield of the Americas" alliance. Analyst Michael Shifter said the frustration reflected unrealistic expectations rather than ideology.
