Heavy rain forced organisers to cancel the last Australian MotoGP to be held at the Phillip Island circuit on Sunday, spoiling the farewell before the event moves to an Adelaide street circuit next year, Al Jazeera reports, citing Reuters.
The Moto2 and Moto3 races were scrapped first. The main race was delayed by two hours before being called off mid-afternoon because poor visibility meant the medical helicopter could not operate safely; it would take about 45 minutes to reach the track from Melbourne.
Riders instead completed a slow lap behind the safety car to greet the sell-out crowd. Home rider Jack Miller, who leaves MotoGP at the end of the season for World Superbikes, called the decision hard to accept. The seaside track had hosted the championship for 30 years.
