MetService has put Northland and Auckland under a severe thunderstorm watch from noon to 9pm on Friday, warning of localised downpours of 25 to 40mm an hour, RNZ reports.
The forecaster said there was a moderate risk of storms turning severe in the afternoon and evening, particularly in south-western Northland south of Kaitaia and Whangārei, and in Auckland. Auckland Emergency Management warned that rain that heavy can cause surface and flash flooding, especially near streams, rivers and narrow valleys, as well as slips.
MetService meteorologist Alanna Burrows said thunderstorms were also possible on Saturday, including in parts of the South Island, and advised people heading to vote in the general election to check the rain radar and latest forecasts before going out.
