New Zealand First deputy Shane Jones has called fellow candidate Michael Laws’s on-air jibe about Opportunity’s Kayla Kingdon-Bebb “reckless and foolish”, RNZ reports from the final televised campaign debate. Party leader Winston Peters said earlier that Laws’s future in the party was still to be decided. Jones said the remark was “very distractful” and that more would be said after the election, leaving any caucus decision to Peters.
The Q+A People’s Debate also saw unusual agreement: Labour’s Kieran McAnulty and ACT’s David Seymour both opposed an outright fireworks ban, while Seymour and Greens co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick rejected an under-16 social media ban in favour of curbing harmful algorithms. Only Swarbrick and Te Pāti Māori backed scrapping fast-track laws and restoring a fees-free university year.
