About 3,500 telecommunications towers up to 20 metres tall are due across New Zealand over the next decade, and residents say they have no say over where they go, RNZ reports. Tower firms Connexa and Fortysouth will not disclose sites, citing sabotage risk and commercial sensitivity, and the government says it does not hold the locations.
From 8 October, Resource Management Act changes let the masts proceed without resource consent or consultation. One Tree Hill residents facing a five-storey-high tower near homes say industrial land nearby would be more suitable and note local height limits of about eight metres for ordinary buildings. Auckland Council and Auckland Transport cannot block the projects under the new rules, neighbours say.
