Former EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said Britain should be allowed back into the European Union without taking the euro or rejoining the Schengen passport-free zone if voters choose closer ties, Politico reports. Speaking as a French lawmaker, he said the door was open but insisted there could be “no cherry-picking” on single-market membership — a line he used during Brexit talks.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has floated eventual rejoining, possibly in Labour’s next manifesto, including single-market or customs-union options. Barnier also called France’s pre-presidential mood “pre-insurrectionary” and warned that Marine Le Pen’s platform points toward ending the EU project of the past 40 years, while rejecting comparisons between her and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni.
