US President Donald Trump has said Washington is “giving serious consideration” to renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America”, arguing the United States expects less business with Ontario, SBS News reports. The remark echoes his 2025 order renaming the Gulf of Mexico and comes as he told Canadian leaders to “fall in line” or face worse tariffs, including threatened 50% duties on vehicles, parts and steel.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said US demands aimed to destroy major Canadian industries. Ottawa announced counter-tariffs of 15–50% on US goods, including lifting steel and aluminium duties to 50%, after talks collapsed and US measures hit about US$20bn of Canadian exports. Carney said Canada would match Washington dollar for dollar to protect workers and firms.
