South Africa will make funding to help countries adapt to climate change one of its main demands at the COP31 climate talks in November, Daily Maverick reports. Environment minister David Maynier told a national consultation on Friday that negotiators would seek a target to triple adaptation finance by 2035, progress on the global goal on adaptation and adequate loss and damage funding.
The country has suffered deadly floods this year in Limpopo and Mpumalanga and later in the Western Cape, and forecasters warn of a hotter, drier summer. Maynier argued that Africa produces only about 4 per cent of global emissions. The report notes, however, that South Africa is the continent's largest emitter, and that officials concede there is less clarity on adaptation goals than on cutting emissions.
