At least five people have died after torrential rain from Storm Adam swept across eastern Spain this week, The Guardian reports.
The town of Pego in Alicante recorded 632mm of rain in 36 hours, 430mm of it in six hours, while Oliva in Valencia received 600mm in a day. About 850,000 people in 145 municipalities across Valencia and Alicante were placed under a temporary lockdown on Monday because of flooding.
Around 500 people have been rescued and 2,100 evacuated. In the Balearic Islands, Ibiza logged more than 130 incidents, and flooding at its airport led to some flights being diverted or suspended.
The worst of the storm has passed and conditions are improving, but local disruption is expected to continue. Meanwhile Storm Austen is bringing strong winds to north-west France, Ireland and parts of Britain.
