Torrential rain has caused flash flooding across southeast Queensland, breaking several October rainfall records, closing 14 schools and prompting hundreds of emergency calls, Euronews reports.
A water treatment plant near Moreton Bay, north of Brisbane, measured more than 250mm in 24 hours from Thursday, and at least eight weather stations logged over 300mm by Friday morning, more than three times the forecast. Beerburrum had its wettest October day on record and Toowoomba its heaviest October rain in 29 years.
Residents in parts of Caboolture and Burpengary were told to prepare to evacuate as more rain arrived on Friday. In Morayfield, ABC reporter Will Murray and a bystander swam out to pull a driver from a sinking car; no one was hurt.
Wet weather is expected to continue into the weekend, with another peak forecast for Monday, and parts of New South Wales also in the storm's path.
