Indonesia seizes 1.1 tonnes of ketamine from tanker in Strait of Malacca

·

Indonesian authorities have seized more than a tonne of ketamine from a foreign-flagged tanker, the country's second major haul of the drug in two months, CNA reports.

National police chief Suyudi Ario Seto said intelligence officers had tracked the MT Global 168, which sailed from Thailand through the Andaman Sea, since August. Police and customs officers intercepted it in the Strait of Malacca on Tuesday as it headed for Port Klang in Malaysia, and took it to Belawan Port in North Sumatra.

Officers found 1.16 tonnes of ketamine in 58 sacks, worth an estimated US$192 million. The ship flies the Mongolian flag but is owned by a company in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Eight crew members, seven Indonesian and one Taiwanese, were arrested. Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws.
