Cristina Fernández de Kirchner goes on trial again alongside son Máximo

·

Former Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, already under house arrest for corruption, has gone on trial in a new money-laundering case alongside her son Máximo, a national deputy, the Buenos Aires Times reports.

Fernández de Kirchner, 73, followed Friday's hearing by video link from her Buenos Aires flat. The trial merges the Hotesur and Los Sauces cases and has 19 defendants. It is her third corruption trial and her son's first.

Prosecutors allege that money diverted through public road contracts during the presidencies of Néstor Kirchner and his widow was returned to the family through hotel rentals and property deals involving businessmen such as Lázaro Báez and Cristóbal López. Both Kirchners could face up to 10 years in prison.

Their lawyers say the transactions were legal and declared. The pair were acquitted in 2021, but that ruling was overturned in 2023. Hearings resume on Monday.
