Campaigners seeking redress for slavery in the US are pressing on despite opposition from the Trump administration, ABC News reports in an Associated Press article.
Robin Rue Simmons, who helped create a $25,000 housing grant for Black residents harmed by discriminatory housing policy in Evanston, Illinois, is helping more than 100 communities develop similar programmes. She said national redress remained the goal.
The Justice Department this month won a judge's permission to join a lawsuit, first brought by Judicial Watch, arguing Evanston's programme breaches equal protection rules and the Fair Housing Act. President Trump has said the country cannot afford reparations.
Some institutions have scaled back such work amid the administration's push against diversity programmes. In March, the UN General Assembly backed a resolution calling for reparations for the slave trade; the US voted against.
