SS United States to be sunk off Florida next month to form artificial reef

·

Officials in Okaloosa County, Florida, say they expect to sink the historic ocean liner SS United States in the Gulf during the second week of November, creating what would be the world's largest artificial reef, according to an Associated Press report carried by ABC News.

The ship will be scuttled about 22 nautical miles south-west of Destin, though the date could move because of the weather. County officials described the plan as a unique asset for the environment and for tourism.

The liner, almost 1,000 feet long, set a transatlantic speed record on its first voyage in 1952. Preservation groups tried to save it but could not meet the high costs. Supporters hope it will become a leading dive site among the area's more than 500 artificial reefs, bringing millions of dollars a year to diving shops, fishing charters and hotels.
