Two brothers from Brazil's wealthiest family have become prominent opponents of right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of Sunday's tight runoff, The Japan Times reports.
João and Walter Moreira Salles, heirs to the Itaú Unibanco banking fortune with a combined net worth put at $17.6 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, donate heavily to progressive and left-leaning candidates for Congress. They have also backed journalism and films critical of the conservative views of Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Their stance sets them apart from much of Brazil's business elite, which has sought closer ties with Bolsonaro as his support has grown. In an essay published this month, João Moreira Salles dismissed the candidate as more a surname than a politician. Bolsonaro faces President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the second round.
