About 16.2% of companies in Japan have had a data breach or a suspected one, caused either by cyberattacks or by staff mistakes, according to a Teikoku Databank survey reported by The Japan Times. Large firms were hit far more often, at 30.2%, than small businesses, at 14.3%. The research firm received valid answers from 1,328 companies in early October.
Respondents described leaks caused by emails sent to the wrong address and by staff replying to senders posing as clients. A further 14.8% said they did not know whether they had been breached, suggesting some firms cannot gauge their exposure. Smaller companies said they struggled to pay for security measures or hire specialists, and some asked for financial and practical support.
