A 66-year-old woman from Syracuse, New York, has been charged with voting illegally after saying she only recently discovered she was not born in the United States, according to an Associated Press report carried by PBS NewsHour.
Marva Cook, a former Syracuse University basketball player, told investigators she was adopted as a toddler and always assumed she was a citizen, until a search for her birth mother turned up a German birth certificate. Prosecutors say she has held a green card for several years but voted in elections, and she faces a single misdemeanour charge over the 2022 midterms. She could also face deportation.
Ms Cook declined to discuss the case but said she was shackled in court despite surrendering voluntarily. Federal prosecutors called voter fraud rampant, though the administration's own inquiries have found such cases very rare.
