Tamil Nadu braces for heavy rain as Bay of Bengal system strengthens

·

Weather forecasters in Chennai have warned of heavy to very heavy rain across much of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, with a red alert for possible extremely heavy falls in parts of Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts, The Hindu reports.

The Regional Meteorological Centre said a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal had become well marked on Saturday and was expected to strengthen into a depression, then a deep depression on Sunday and a cyclonic storm by Monday morning. It is forecast to move west-northwest and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast around Wednesday.

Heavy rain is also expected in Chennai and surrounding districts. Rain fell at about 80 per cent of monitoring stations in the state up to Saturday morning, with Burliyar in the Nilgiris recording the most, at 25cm. Heavy rain is forecast in southern districts again on Monday.
