Province House in Charlottetown reopens after 12-year restoration

·

Prince Edward Island's historic legislature, Province House in Charlottetown, officially reopened on Saturday after a restoration lasting more than a decade, CTV News reports, citing The Canadian Press.

About 2,000 people came to see the work. Joey Jeffrey, clerk of the legislative assembly, said every stone and piece of wood had been cleaned or replaced to preserve the building's heritage character. Opened in 1847, it is Canada's second-oldest legislature and is known as the Birthplace of Confederation because of the 1864 talks held there.

The building closed in 2015 after an engineering report found a crumbling foundation, a leaking roof and deteriorating masonry. Work planned to take three to five years was delayed by the pandemic, supply-chain problems, rising material costs and labour shortages.
