The Trump administration has gone to court seeking to stop certification of Alaska's Senate election if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses to Democrat Mary Peltola, CBS News reports.
The Justice Department argues that a second candidate, teacher Daniel J. Sullivan, could draw votes intended for the senator in the ranked-choice contest, and alleges he deliberately sought to confuse voters. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the case does not aim to stop any ballot being cast, but to preserve ballots so officials can judge whether voters were misled.
Peltola's campaign called the move a political threat to overturn an election. In June the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that Daniel J. Sullivan could stay on the ballot, reversing an elections division decision to exclude him.
