A young woman who fled Calgary's 2013 flood as a child is due to testify next week in Canada's first youth-led federal climate trial, CTV News reports.
Sadie Vipond, now an environmental sciences student at the University of British Columbia, is one of 15 plaintiffs in La Rose v. His Majesty the King. The case, set to run for four weeks in Vancouver, has reached trial after seven years of motions and appeals, including federal attempts to have it thrown out.
The plaintiffs, from seven provinces, the Northwest Territories and Yukon, were aged between 10 and 19 when the case began. They argue that Ottawa's support for fossil fuel development, while it misses emissions targets, endangers young people's health and futures, and they want the court to order a climate recovery plan. The US-based group Our Children's Trust is backing the case.
