Update: Peltola and Democrats ask judge to throw out Justice Department’s Alaska Senate lawsuit

·

Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee filed a motion on Friday asking to join, and to have dismissed, a Justice Department lawsuit over Alaska's US Senate election, the Anchorage Daily News reports.

The federal suit, filed on Thursday at President Donald Trump's direction, seeks to stop state officials certifying the result if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses. It also calls for an inquiry into whether votes for a namesake candidate, retired Petersburg teacher Dan J. Sullivan, were meant for the incumbent.
The Peltola filing argues the suit belongs to a wider federal assault on free and fair voting across the country, and questions whether Governor Mike Dunleavy's administration will defend it vigorously. The state Department of Law said it was reviewing the case, which is before Judge Sharon Gleason.
