When China's Communist Party Central Committee meets behind closed doors in Beijing for its fifth plenum on Monday, much of the focus will be on preparations for filling hundreds of senior posts at next year's 21st party congress, the South China Morning Post reports.
Central to that transition is the party's "seventh generation", officials born from the late 1960s through the 1970s. A Tsinghua University researcher told the paper the party wants cadres with political loyalty, integrity, grass-roots experience and expertise in science and technology.
The Post notes that age appears to be counting for less in promotions, and that the anti-corruption campaign is affecting this generation as much as earlier ones. Whether or not Xi Jinping, 73, stays on beyond 2032, he will need a strong bench of younger officials, many of whom are expected to come from the Central Committee.
