The Election Commission of India has declared void Thursday's voting at three polling stations in the Agra Division Teachers' Constituency and ordered a fresh poll there on Monday, 26 October, The Hindu reports.
The decision, made on the recommendation of Uttar Pradesh's chief electoral officer, covers stations in Kheragarh, Saiya and Fatehabad. The commission said anyone involved in the irregularities that led to the annulment must not be deployed for the re-poll, which will run from 8am to 4pm.
The move followed an outcry from the Samajwadi Party, whose candidate for the Legislative Council seat, Akash Agarwal, alleged irregularities and harassment of his supporters, and said he felt he was being treated like a terrorist. Party leader Akhilesh Yadav accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of electoral malpractice.
