A 48-year-old man from El Salvador has died in custody at the D Ray James facility in Folkston, Georgia, part of a large detention complex where detainees are on hunger strike, The Guardian reports.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed on Saturday that Luis Sandoval was pronounced dead early on Friday, less than an hour after staff found him. The agency said he had previous convictions, including for aggravated assault, and that his death was under investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining the death at the local sheriff's request.
It was not known whether Mr Sandoval had joined the hunger strike, which detainees say is a protest against long detention and poor conditions. Project South, an advocacy group, called for an independent inquiry. He is the 60th person to die in ICE custody since the start of President Trump's second term.
