The 39th La Carrera Panamericana, Mexico's open-road endurance race, has attracted drivers from 15 countries, Mexico News Daily reports.
The event began in 1950 as a Mexican government initiative to mark the completion of the country's stretch of the Pan-American Highway, and has a reputation as one of the most dangerous rallies in the world. Competitors told the paper that taking part can cost more than $75,000.
Among them is Czech professional driver Jan Bednar, who is racing a restored 1969 BMW 3.0 CS that had competed in the event more than a decade ago. He said he found the car in a garage in Eastern Europe and reunited its original team for the race. He told the paper he was thoroughly enjoying his debut in the Mexican race.
