Brazil's attorney general, Paulo Gonet, has asked the Supreme Court to suspend part of an electoral court ruling on how Indigenous voters are taken to polling stations, a day before Sunday's presidential run-off, The Rio Times reports.
The order by electoral court president Kassio Nunes Marques requires federal agencies to seek a judge's approval before each transport operation, and refused to treat vehicles and boats from the Indigenous affairs agency Funai, the Indigenous Health Secretariat and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples as pre-approved. Some remote communities travel for hours by boat to vote.
Citing Brazilian media, the paper says Gonet argued the approval process amounts in practice to no transport at all. He wants the government's original transport plan restored, saying oversight should protect neutrality without stopping anyone voting.
