A tsunami warning issued after a strong earthquake off Vanuatu on Saturday has been cancelled, RNZ reports, carrying AFP coverage with its own reporting. The quake struck about 200 kilometres north-west of Port Olry and was initially measured at magnitude 7.2, before the US Geological Survey revised it down to 6.9. The agency also recorded a second earthquake of magnitude 6.3 nearby.
Vanuatu's Geological Hazards Department said on Saturday afternoon that, based on the latest sea level and observation data, there was no longer a tsunami threat to the country's coast. No damage or injuries were mentioned in the report.
The low-lying Pacific archipelago sits on the Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic activity around the Pacific basin, and earthquakes there are common.
