Tunisian police used tear gas against protesters in Ettadhamen, a suburb of Tunis, on Thursday after a man held over alleged drug dealing died, Daily Maverick reports, carrying a Reuters story. His family said he died because of police violence after his arrest and demanded accountability, while local media reported that he had swallowed drugs. Protesters blocked roads, burned tyres and threw stones.
There were also clashes in Jebeniana and Agareb in Sfax governorate, where relatives said another man died during a security chase. In the city of Sfax, students protested over the death of a fellow student who they said waited too long for an ambulance.
The unrest follows the largest protest in years against President Kais Saied in the capital last Saturday, amid anger over living conditions and public services.
