French authorities have asked several cities to bring in partial curfews as they try to restore order after the country's worst rioting in years, NBC News reports. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said after an emergency meeting on Monday that about 3,000 businesses had been looted or damaged, but that nobody had been killed.
The interior ministry says more than half a million people joined protests over the weekend, almost 2,400 were arrested and nearly 1,000 police officers and firefighters were hurt. The unrest grew out of largely peaceful demonstrations over living costs and school conditions. In Limoges the 19th-century town hall was gutted by fire, and the Louvre in Paris closed after protesters announced a blockade of the museum.
