Update: Protesters rally at Meta’s São Paulo office as study finds irregular election ads

·

A group of demonstrators protested on Monday outside the São Paulo offices of Meta over claims that the company has interfered in Brazil's presidential election, Africanews reports.

The protest follows an electoral court ruling last week, in a case brought by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's campaign, that Meta's platforms must treat Lula and his run-off rival Flávio Bolsonaro equally before the 25 October vote. Meta denies political bias and says recent problems on Instagram were caused by unrelated global technical faults and anti-fraud measures.

Separately, a study by NetLab at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro found that Meta allowed at least 1,613 irregular political adverts between July and September, mostly paid for from the United States. They were viewed about 171 million times and earned roughly 2 million reais. In Brazil, only parties, candidates and coalitions may buy election adverts.
