Google Cloud outage disrupts UK banking apps and online services

·

A fault in Google Cloud's europe-west2 region, which is believed to serve London, has disrupted dozens of websites and apps in the UK, GB News reports.

Revolut, Halifax and Lloyds Bank confirmed problems with card payments, transfers, cash withdrawals and app log-ins, while crowdsourced reports suggested people were also having trouble with services from Gov.uk, NHS England, NatWest, Asda, Royal Mail and Rightmove. Google said it was experiencing an issue with multiple services in the region, that its engineers were investigating, and apologised to those affected. At the time of the report there was no fix or workaround.

The cause has not been made public. The disruption shows how many unrelated organisations rely on the same cloud infrastructure, so that a failure in one part of a provider's network can take several services offline at once.
