The Basic Court in Pristina has convicted Kosovo Serb Milorad Djokovic of war crimes against ethnic Albanian civilians and sentenced him to 10 years in prison, Balkan Insight reports.
Prosecutors said he was part of Serbian military and police forces that surrounded and attacked the village of Ozdrim, in the western Peja/Pec municipality, in May 1999. According to the indictment, six civilians were killed, three wounded villagers were later executed, and about 40 people were detained, some of whom were tortured and later held in prisons in Serbia until the Red Cross intervened.
Djokovic had pleaded not guilty. His 2022 arrest drew protests from Belgrade, which called it intimidation of Kosovo Serbs. One victim's relative described the sentence as far too lenient.
