The Home Office has revoked a deportation order against Tony Hall, a 62-year-old who came to London from Barbados aged 12 in 1976 to join his Windrush-generation parents, The Guardian reports.
Officials had tried to remove him since 2009, when he finished an eight-year sentence for a 2001 conspiracy to rob. A 2010 attempt failed when Barbados declined to admit him and he was flown back to London. His uncertain status meant he could not work, rent a home, claim benefits or get full NHS care.
Mr Hall said he was relieved to be able to live without fear in the country he calls home. His lawyer welcomed the decision but said it could not return 17 lost years. The Home Office said the timing, a day after his case was reported, was coincidental.
