Brazil's foreign ministry has accused Argentina's president, Javier Milei, of an unacceptable attempt at foreign interference in Sunday's presidential run-off, the Buenos Aires Times reports.
On Tuesday Milei called President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a thief on X and said he hoped Lula would not try to steal the election. Milei backs Lula's right-wing rival, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Brazil's statement also accused him of repeating claims made by those behind a failed coup attempt four years ago.
Relations between the neighbours were already strained. In July, after Milei used the same insult in São Paulo, Brazil recalled its ambassador from Buenos Aires for consultations. Polls suggest a close run-off after Bolsonaro unexpectedly led the first round on 4 October.
