South Africa's Madlanga commission has reserved its decision on whether the acting head of the National Intelligence Coordinating Committee, Dr Ntandazo Sifolo, can give all his evidence in private, Daily Maverick reports.
The committee brings together the country's intelligence agencies and advises the president and cabinet. Sifolo's evidence is expected to show what intelligence services knew about organised crime infiltrating the justice system and how they responded.
Lawyers for the commission's evidence leaders argued his material, including national intelligence estimates and briefs from 2022 to 2025, was declassified only for the inquiry and that only a high court could allow wider release. AmaBhungane, News24 and Daily Maverick opposed a blanket closed hearing, arguing for open justice. Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga is yet to rule.
