Five men face charges in New Taipei over an alleged scheme to hurt Huang Yi-hao, a comedian whose stand-up targets Xi Jinping and China's ruling party, The Guardian reports.
Prosecutors say a person from mainland China, referred to as K, paid the men to hurt Huang badly enough to need hospital treatment. A GPS tracker was allegedly fitted to his scooter months earlier, and on 11 September two of the men drove into him on his way home. He suffered a bruised pelvis, and K allegedly withheld part of the promised NT$450,000 because the injuries were minor.
Taiwanese prosecutors described the case as suspected cross-border suppression directed by the Communist Party. China's Taiwan Affairs Office did not respond to requests for comment. Taiwan says at least 126 people have been affected by such repression.
