Donald Trump has questioned the legitimacy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's victory in Brazil's presidential run-off and likened it to his own 2020 defeat, even as leaders across Latin America, among them several conservative allies of the US, sent their congratulations, MercoPress reports.
According to the EFE news agency, Mr Trump suggested without evidence that Brazil had followed what he called a Biden playbook. The White House has not formally commented on the result, which defeated candidate Flávio Bolsonaro also refuses to accept and says he will seek to annul.
Uruguay's Yamandú Orsi was among the first to call Lula. Chile's José Antonio Kast, Paraguay's Santiago Peña, Bolivia's Rodrigo Paz, Ecuador's Daniel Noboa, Panama's José Raúl Mulino and Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum also sent congratulations. Argentina's Javier Milei, who backed Mr Bolsonaro, had not done so.
